At gaviaWOODWORKS, we are life and work partners who design together. Our different points of view only add to our creative process.
We’re always looking for ideas so want to thank all artisans, crafters, DIYers and woodworkers who generously share their work and experience online. You inspire us in the workshop and in our own web/social media presence.
It all starts with an idea that we've seen or that a client brings to us. Then, the piece is driven by what we see in the wood. Each of us sees different things in the shape, grain and colour. It all gives hints about what we might bring out by cutting, shaping, filling, sanding and finishing. The wood features also give hints about what challenges we will face. But, there a surprises too. Remember that each piece is unique and one-of-a-kind.
Once we settle on a project, we often build a sample and use it for a while. This helps us make sure the wood creations last and reveals any glitches in our design. This stage offers many “I told you so” moments :)
The client is part of the entire journey - idea, design, build. They make design decisions for their custom-crafted found-wood piece by choosing the wood from our inventory (sometimes providing their own wood), size/dimensions (sometimes dictated by the salvaged wood), colours and finishes (top coats, stain, legs, brackets).
